Flying outbound Helsinki

Initial contact

If EFHK_DEL (Helsinki delivery) is open, make initial contact to that station. He will issue the route clearance to you.

Startup, pushback and taxi instructions are acquired from EFHK_GND (Helsinki ground). If EFHK_DEL is closed, GND will also issue the clearance.

Ground gives the taxi clearance only to a point where runway crossing is not required. Runway crossing clearance is always received from EFHK_TWR (Helsinki tower) to which ground will instruct to contact. Tower will also naturally give the takeoff clearance.

When airborne, contact EFHK_APP (or _DEP, if active) as instructed by SID chart (when passing 1500 ft).

If no ATC unit at EFHK is active, contact EFES_CTR (Tampere radar) who also handles traffic at EFHK (including ground traffic) if his traffic situation permits!

Routes – departure to south

Routes southbound (to Estonian airspace) must be planned to exit Helsinki TMA via point DOBAN (which after airway L855, P870, P31 or P739).

Routes – departure to east

Eastbound departures will exit Helsinki TMA via point GOGLA, and with airway G34 or B160 after it. Expect to use metric flight levels after point GOGLA due to Russian airspace.

Another fix to exit Helsinki area is via point MILSI which is used mainly for domestic Finnish flights heading to eastern Finland (such as Kuopio or Joensuu).

Routes – departure to north

Departures to north will exit Helsinki TMA via point ANT (Antoni VOR) or via PIVAK. The northbound departures are most commonly domestic Finnish flights.

Routes – departure to west

Departing to west or south west from Helsinki has three options, depending on the direction of the flight. Fixes are: ARTUR, RUNEN and ELMUT.

Fix ARTUR is exit point mainly for domestic flights, while RUNEN takes to airway N872 which leads to Stockholm / Oslo.

Third exit point, ELMUT, joins airway T6 which leads to south western corner of Finland and this is the preferred route if you are flying to central Europe.
